Face-to-Face

Leading Academic Change Summit

The inaugural Leading Academic Change Summit will be held on December 2 and 3, 2014 at the College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center in Hyattsville, MD. This convening will engage a diverse group of academic transformation and innovation experts from public and private colleges, universities, and systems to share how academic transformation efforts are unfolding on their campuses, discuss common challenges, share promising practices, and form a network of leaders across the country dedicated to rethinking higher education. Attendees will participate in interactive workshops and discussions around four key areas:

  1. Defining and envisioning the future of an emerging field
Participants will work together to codify this emerging field by documenting its origins, describing its current features, and developing a common language for the aims and means that define Academic Transformation. They will also work together to anticipate and envision the forms that Academic Transformation may take in the future.
  2. Leading by creating conditions to foster Academic Transformation
Participants will share cases to illustrate how Academic Transformation begins and gains momentum. They will use these examples to discuss challenges and opportunities to leading Academic Transformation and to clarify what leaders need to advance Innovation within and across institutions and systems.
  3. Forming professional networks to advance policies and practices
Participants will have opportunities to network and collaborate in a setting purposefully designed to facilitate the open exchange of ideas, assessment and evaluation results, and emerging practices in order to foster new learning and leadership development.
  4. Disseminating key insights into leading Academic Transformation
Participants will be invited to co-create a set of products for dissemination (conference convening papers, compendium of cases, video, reflective essays) that describe Academic Transformation and the particular educational challenges it seeks to address; to explain what Academic Transformation leadership entails; and to lay out future visions of undergraduate learning and teaching, which Academic Transformation leaders aspire to realize.
