Education Policy Committee to Consider Proposal for Erickson School of Aging Studies at University of Maryland, Baltimore County; June 1 Agenda also Includes Academic Program Proposals

ADELPHI, Md. (May 26, 2005) - The Committee on Education Policy of the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents will consider a proposal to establish a School of Aging Studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The committee will review the proposal at its meeting scheduled to begin at 9:30 am Wednesday, June 1, at USM, 3300 Metzerott Road in Adelphi. John Erickson, founder and CEO of Erickson Retirement Communities, in 2004 committed $5 million to UMBC to establish the Erickson School of Aging Studies. As proposed, the school would train and prepare business leaders, policy makers, and applied researchers to address the diverse needs of the aging population. Also at Wednesday's meeting, the Committee on Education Policy will consider proposals for the following academic programs: In addition, the committee will review proposed guidelines for non-USM institutions offering programs at the university system's two regional centers-Universities at Shady Grove and the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown.

The committee also will receive reports on several topics, including academic advising, campus crime, and implementation of the USM Financial Aid Task Force recommendations. Access the full agenda for Wednesday's meeting at: /usm/regents/Agendas/ed060105.html.
