USM Board of Regents Meets October 24

Adelphi, Md. (Oct. 21, 2014) -- The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents at its next meeting will vote on a proposed policy regarding academic achievement in intercollegiate athletics and hear several information items, including an educational forum on the Maryland Collaborative to Reduce College Drinking.

The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday, October 24 in the Atkinson Room of the Lane University Center at Frostburg State University, 101 Braddock Road, Frostburg, Md.

The policy on intercollegiate athletics would require any new contract negotiated for a coach or athletic director to include a provision prohibiting the payout of incentive-based compensation where a sport or sports falls below the appropriate institutional Academic Progress Rate (APR) standard. Other action items before the board include funding authorization for the fine arts building renovation at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

The information presentation regarding the Maryland Collaborative to Reduce College Drinking will be led by Joshua Sharfstein, M.D., secretary of the Maryland Department of Health & Mental Hygiene, and Frostburg State President Jonathan Gibralter. Other information items include a report on the status of a memorandum of understanding between multiple institutions that would create the University of Maryland Institute for Healthcare Innovation.

The regents will hear reports from the councils of university system presidents, faculty, staff and students. After the public meeting, the board will vote on whether to reconvene in closed session to discuss personnel, legal, property acquisition, public investment, collective bargaining, and administrative items that fall under closing guidelines of the Open Meetings Act. The full agenda, with supporting materials including the closing statement, can be accessed here.
