Regents' Finance Committee to Consider BRAC Residency Waivers for Defense Contractors, Nov. 16

ADELPHI, Md. (November 13, 2006) – A proposal to waive certain residency requirements for defense contractor employees relocating to Maryland under BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure Commission) 2005 is among the topics to be addressed at the upcoming meeting of the Committee on Finance of the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents. The public session of the meeting begins at 10:45 a.m., Thursday, November 16, 2006. It will be held in the open area on the 7th Floor of the Albin O. Kuhn Library, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), 1000 Hilltop Circle, Catonsville, MD.

At its October 27th meeting, the Board of Regents moved to waive certain residency requirements for civilian employees of the U.S. Armed Forces (including spouses and dependent children) who move to Maryland as a result of BRAC. The waiver allows these employees and their families to qualify for in-state tuition rates without a 12-month residency requirement. The new resolution would extend this waiver to employees (including spouses and dependent children) of defense contractors transferred under BRAC. Other action items before the committee are consideration of the University of Baltimore’s Facilities Master Plan 2004-2014 and the renewal of system-wide contracts for scientific supplies.

The committee’s information/discussion items include:

· Opening Fall 2006 Enrollment and FY 2007 Estimated FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) Enrollment Report;

· FY 2008 Operating Budget Request process;

· Contingent Category II Employee Conversion to Regular Status—Annual Report.
