Three New Members of USM Board of Regents Appointed; James T. Brady Elected Chair
Adelphi, Md. (July 6, 2016) -- The University System of Maryland (USM) welcomes three new members to the Board of Regents, as terms expire for certain regents whose service began several years ago.
Ellen Fish joins the board, effective July 1, succeeding James L. Shea. Louis Pope on August 1 will succeed the Hon. Francis X. Kelly. Brandon Enriquez, a junior honors student at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), replaces student regent Sydney Comitz of the University of Baltimore School of Law. The student regent serves a 1-year term, beginning every July 1; other regents serve a five-year term that can be renewed once.
Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan recently announced the appointment of the new regents. Additionally, Gov. Hogan has reappointed Regent Barry L. Gossett to a second term. Recent appointee D'Ana Johnson began her service on the board on Feb. 9, 2016, succeeding Louise Michaux Gonzales. Former Regents Shea and Kelly both served the maximum two consecutive, five-year terms.

"I would also like to extend the board's best wishes and deepest appreciation to Regents Shea, Kelly, and Gonzales for the dedication and impressive standards they brought to their leadership positions as regents and to Regent Comitz for her dedicated service while also attending law school."
Ellen Fish is executive vice President and chief lending officer with Hamilton Bank, a community bank serving Maryland, Washington D.C., northern Virginia, and southern Pennsylvania. She currently serves on the board of directors of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce, Towson University Foundation, Leadership Baltimore County, and Roland Park Country School.
Louis Pope is president and owner of Century 21 Trademark Realty in Bethesda and Greenbelt. He earned a B.S. in finance and banking from the University of Maryland, College Park. Pope previously served on the National Advisory Council of the U.S. Small Business Administration as an appointee of President George W. Bush.
Brandon Enriquez is majoring in both economics and mathematics at UMBC, where he maintains a 4.0 grade point average. He has been granted affiliate membership in the National Security Administration through the Meyerhoff Scholars Program and has presented research at several conferences.

"They bring with them a diverse range of professional experience and perspective, qualities that will enhance the benefits they bring to the USM and our state."
At its public meeting on June 10, the board voted on the appointment of officers for the 2017 fiscal year (July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017). In addition to the election of Brady as chair, Gossett is the vice chair. Gary L. Attman is treasurer and Linda R. Gooden is assistant treasurer. Michelle A. Gourdine, M.D., is secretary and Regent Thomas G. Slater is assistant secretary.
A 17-member Board of Regents, including one full-time student, governs the University System of Maryland. Appointed by the governor, the regents oversee the system's academic, administrative, and financial operations; formulate policy; and appoint the USM chancellor and the presidents of the system's 12 institutions. With the exception of the student member, each regent is appointed for a term of five years and may not serve more than two consecutive terms. The student regent is appointed for a one-year term and may be reappointed. Regents serve on the board without compensation.
The University System of Maryland comprises 12 institutions, two regional higher education centers and a system office.
