Seven USM Leaders Among Daily Record's 50 Most Influential Marylanders for 2007

ADELPHI, Md. (March 30, 2007) - Seven individuals representing the University System of Maryland (USM) have been named among 50 "Influential Marylanders for 2007" by the Baltimore-based Daily Record business and legal newspaper.

The editors of The Daily Record selected five winners in each of 10 categories that reflect significant segments of Maryland's civic, commercial, and professional activity: civic leadership, communications, finance, education, health care, law, philanthropy, real estate, and technology. In making their selections, the editors added a 10th "freestyle" category to include some very influential Marylanders who did not fit neatly into one of the other categories.

The following individuals--representing USM's leadership in undergraduate and professional education, research and development, technology transfer, and athletics--are among the 50 honorees who will be recognized on Friday, April 25, 2007, at the Baltimore Museum of Art:

Freeman Hrabowski III, President, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (Education);

C.D. "Dan" Mote, Jr., President, University of Maryland, College Park (Education);

Dr. E. Albert Reece, Dean, University of Maryland School of Medicine (Health Care);

Karen Rothenberg, Dean, University of Maryland School of Law (Law);

Martha Connolly, Director, Maryland Industrial Partnerships Program, University of Maryland, College Park (Technology);

Jennie Hunter-Cevera, President of the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (Technology);

Debbie Yow, Athletic Director, University of Maryland, College Park (Freestyle).

"We are proud to recognize these individuals for their contributions and stature in a variety of endeavors that have impact throughout Maryland and beyond," said Christopher A. Eddings, The Daily Record's publisher and president. "The selection process was challenging because of the impressive credentials of so many Marylanders, but we wanted to give special attention to these people whose accomplishments are so important in so many ways."
