Dr. Sadie Gregory Appointed Interim President of Coppin State University

ADELPHI, Md. (April 19, 2007) - William E. Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland (USM), has announced the appointment of Dr. Sadie Gregory, provost and vice president of academic affairs at Coppin State University (CSU), as CSU's interim president, effective June 6, 2007.

Dr. Stanley F. Battle, Coppin's outgoing president, will step down after four years at CSU to become chancellor of North Carolina A&T State University as of June 5, 2007. The university's presidential search committee expects to complete its nationwide search for his successor by fall 2007.

"I am pleased that Dr. Gregory has accepted this appointment," said Chancellor Kirwan. "The Board of Regents and I have great confidence in her ability to lead CSU during this transitional period."

Gregory has served as CSU's provost and vice president of academic affairs since May 2004. Prior to joining CSU, she served as the interim vice president of academic affairs at the Richmond School of Health and Technology. Previously, she was assistant dean of student affairs and, later, dean of Virginia State University's School of Business. Gregory holds a Ph.D. in economics from Howard University, an M.A. in economics from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a B.S. in economics from Virginia State University.

Coppin State University is a historically black, four-year liberal arts university offering 23 undergraduate majors and 10 graduate-degree majors.
