He received a Ph.D. in history and humanities from Stanford University in 1964. In 1974, he became the founding dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania, and later became its provost. He has served as president of the New York Public Library and Brown University. In 1998, he was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Clinton, and in 2004, he received the Medal of Freedom-the nation's highest civil award-from President Bush.

Established in honor of Donald N. Langenberg upon his retirement as USM's second chancellor, the Langenberg Lecture annually presents new perspectives on education in America. The lecture rotates among USM's member institutions.
