New School of Public Health, Capital Budget Proposals Top Agenda for Regents' Annual Meeting June 23
ADELPHI, Md. (June 21, 2006) - The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents will hold its annual meeting Friday, June 23 at Frostburg State University (FSU). The meeting is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. in room 201 of the Lane Center. Directions can be found at: http://www.frostburg.edu/about/maryland.htm. The regents will vote on the creation of a new School of Public Health at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). If approved, this would be the seventh professional school at UMB and the first new school there in 45 years.
The board will also consider the following academic programs:
- Master's in Mental Health Counseling at Bowie State University;
- Doctorate in Computer Science at Bowie State University;
- Bachelor's of Music Education at UMCP;
- Doctorate in Anthropology at UMCP;
- Bachelor's in Ethnobotany at Frostburg State University;
- Master's and doctorate in Human Centered Computing at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
The regents will also review a five-year capital budget for USM in two parts: a $1.32 billion capital improvement request (CIP) of state-funding for academic buildings, and a system-funded construction program totaling $403 million over five years. All capital projects reflect the regents' priorities of meeting enrollment demand, enhancing research capacity as well as teaching and learning, and managing or replacing existing buildings in a cost-efficient manner.
As is customary at the board's final meeting of the fiscal year, USM Chancellor William E. Kirwan will deliver his annual report, highlighting the successes within the system during 2005-2006, and discussing future challenges. The nominating committee of the board will also present its recommendations for officers for the upcoming year.
The Executive Director of the State Ethics Commission, Suzanne Fox, will present an overview of State Ethics Law.
