USM Regents Education Policy Committee
to Meet June 3

ADELPHI, Md. (May 28, 2009)-The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents Committee on Education Policy at its next meeting will discuss new academic program proposals and a preliminary report of the recommendations of Governor Martin O'Malley's P-20 Council STEM Task Force.

The public meeting is scheduled to begin at 9:30 am Wednesday, June 3, in room 2100-2104 at the University of Maryland University College Inn and Conference Center. The center is located at 3501 University Boulevard East in Adelphi.

The new academic program proposals under consideration include the following:

•· B.S. in Urban Studies, Coppin State University;

•· Integrated B.S. in Biology/M.S. in Applied Biology, Salisbury University;

•· Professional Science Master's in Applied Physics, Towson University;

•· B.S. in Public Health Science, University of Maryland, College Park (to be offered solely at the Universities at Shady Grove, one of USM's regional centers);

•· Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Elementary and Middle School Science Education, UMCP (to be offered initially at the Universities at Shady Grove).

In other business, the committee will discuss preliminary recommendations of the Governor's P-20 Council STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) Task Force. USM Chancellor William E. Kirwan and June Streckfus, executive director of the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education, co-chair the group that was charged with creating a "statewide plan of recommended STEM actions that will ensure that Maryland's workforce and its research and development infrastructure can support a nationally pereminent and globally competitive knowledge-based economy."
