Adelphi, Md. (Oct. 19, 2009) - The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents at its next meeting will take action on the Towson University facilities master plan and recommendations of the final report of the Governor's STEM Task Force.

The public session is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday, October 23, in Ballroom A of the second floor of the Southern Management Corporation Campus Center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. The center is located at 621 W. Lombard Street, Baltimore, MD 21201.

Kirwan and June Streckfus, executive director of the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education, served as co-chairs for the group that was charged with creating a "statewide plan of recommended STEM actions that will ensure that Maryland's workforce and its research and development infrastructure can support a nationally preeminent and globally competitive knowledge-based economy."

Other action items before the board include:

New academic program proposals, including an M.S. in cyber security at University of Maryland University College and a B.S. in Integrated Early Childhood Education/Special Education: Infant/Primary at Towson University;

Recommendations on the future of the USM Graduate Program in Marine, Estuarine and Environmental Sciences (MEES).

Information items on the agenda include an update on implementation of the Textbook Affordability Policy and Legislation.

The regents will hear reports from the councils of university system presidents, faculty, staff, and students.

After the public meeting, the board will meet in executive session.
