USM Board of Regents to Meet Feb. 12

Adelphi, Md. (Feb. 10, 2010) – The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents will meet Friday, February 12 at the University of Baltimore. The public session of the meeting begins at 8:30 a.m. in the Bogomolny Room on the 5th Floor of the student center. The student center is located at 21 W. Mt. Royal Avenue, Baltimore City.

In the event of inclement weather, the USM will issue additional communication regarding scheduling.

Action items before the regents include:

• Proposals for several new academic programs, including a Bachelor of Fine Arts and modification of the B.S. in Art & Design at Towson University; B.A. in Environmental Sustainability and Human Ecology at University of Baltimore; and a B.S. in Cybersecurity at University of Maryland University College;

• A vote on maintaining the current USM Exempt Salary Structures. Given current economic conditions in Maryland and USM budget constraints, USM Chancellor William E.  Brit  Kirwan recommends that current exempt staff salary structures remain in place;

• Renovation of the Student and Faculty Service Center at University of Maryland University College.

In addition to reports from the councils of university system presidents, faculty, staff, and students, the regents will hear a presentation from Dr. Nancy Grasmick, Maryland State Superintendent of Schools, regarding the Race to the Top Initiative. The program, recently introduced by President Obama, gives states the opportunity to design innovative learning approaches in America’s schools.

There will also be an informational presentation of the 2008-18 Facilities Master Plan (FMP) for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES).

After the public meeting, the board will meet in executive session.
