USM Regent Norman R. Augustine Named Drexel University 2011 Engineering Leader of the Year

Adelphi, Md. -- Norman R. Augustine, a member of the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents since July 2008, has been named Drexel University's 2011 Engineering Leader of the Year. Regent Augustine will be honored by the Philadelphia institution at a ceremony on Feb. 25, 2011, as part of Drexel's National Engineers Week celebration.

Regent Augustine is the former chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corporation. Upon retirement, he joined the faculty of Princeton University. He also served as chairman and principal officer of the American Red Cross for nine years.

Augustine was chair of The National Academies' Committee on Prospering in the Global Economy of the 21st Century that produced the report Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Economic Future in 2005.

A recipient of the President's National Medal of Technology and the Joint Chiefs of Staff Distinguished Public Service Award, Augustine has a long and distinguished career in the aerospace industry. He has also held several prominent positions in public service, as an Assistant Secretary of the Army, Under Secretary of the Army, and later Acting Secretary of the Army.

In addition to numerous corporate and non-profit board memberships, he has served as a trustee of Johns Hopkins University, Princeton University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served for 16 years on the President's council of advisors on Science and Technology.  He is a member of the American Philosophical Society, the National Academy of Sciences and the Council on Foreign Affairs and he is a fellow of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Explorers Club.

Past Drexel Engineer of the Year recipients include Dr. Bernard Amadei, founding president of Engineers Without Borders-USA and co-founder of Engineers Without Borders-International; Dean Kamen, president of DEKA Research and Development Corp. and founder of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology); Dr. Robert Koerner, Drexel emeritus professor and former H.L. Bowman professor of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering and director of Geosynthetic Research Institute; Dr. Mark Adler, the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Mars Exploration program architect and Rover Mission manager.
