Jay A. Perman, M.D., Named Fifth Chancellor of the University System of Maryland

USM Chancellor Search

University System of Maryland (USM) Chancellor Robert L. Caret on May 16, 2019 informed the Board of Regents that he did not wish to be considered for a contract extension and will step down from his post as chancellor on June 30, 2020. Caret has served as USM chancellor since July 1, 2015.

In response to Caret’s announcement, USM Board of Regents Chair Linda Gooden announced the appointment of a 18-member committee to conduct a nationwide search for a new chancellor. The committee, in collaboration with Witt/Kieffer (an executive search firm), will review nominations and applications for the position, conduct interviews with selected candidates, and forward top candidates to the Board of Regents, which will make the final selection.

The selection of the next chancellor is of great importance to the State of Maryland. The USM is a major educational, research, economic, and social engine for the state. Working with partners in the public, private, and non-profit sectors, the USM is committed to improving student success, fostering academic and research innovation, advancing economic development, and improving the quality of life in Maryland. The next chancellor will effectively serve as the system's CEO, overseeing the USM's 12 institutions, 3 higher education centers, and the system office. All in all, this includes close to 20,000 faculty, over 20,000 staff members, more than 175,000 students, and an operating budget approaching $6 billion. Just as importantly, while building on the USM's strong foundation of national and international leadership, the new chancellor will be called upon to set his or her own agenda, establishing new priorities for an ever-changing future.
