JOB SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, performs complex photographic work on various medical subjects such as patients, anatomical structures, pathology specimens, and surgical procedures in order to provide illustrations for scientific publications, patient records, teaching aids, and informational brochures.


PRIMARY DUTIES


1. Confers with clients such as physicians, faculty, and laboratory personnel to clarify photographic requirements. Provides technical advice on settings, angles, lighting, and size of photographs.


2. Photographs objects, anatomical, or biological specimens utilizing fiber optic light source.


3. Photographs protein and hemopheresis gels; culture and electrophoresis plates; and western and northern blots utilizing transillumination and reflected lighting techniques.


4. Prepares rhinoplastic, octoplastic, dental osteotomy, and orthodontic photographs of patients.


5. Produces fundus photographs for ophthalmology patients.


6. Photographs cavernous areas to show interior detail such as heart valve, bone specimens, and intraoral views.


7. Photographs operating room procedures such as open heart, gynecological, neurological, and plastic surgeries.


8. Makes copies of x-rays and similar materials utilizing photographic techniques such as time-lapse and ultraspeed pictures, and ultraviolet or infrared light to produce visible records of normally invisible phenomena.


9. Prepares interior and exterior architectural photographs, patient photographs, and large group photographs utilizing a view camera.


10. Mixes various photographic chemical solutions to develop and process film into prints, slides, negatives, and transparencies.


11. Produces computer slides from original concepts, develops computer art, charts, and graphs.


12. Performs photomacrography and photomicrography.


13. Makes duplications, reductions, color corrections, and other similar photographic procedures.


14. Provides guidance, training, and technical assistance to other staff.


15. Operates and maintains automatic color processing and print processing equipment.


16. Performs preventive maintenance and minor repair on photographic equipment.


17. Monitors inventory levels and requisitions supplies as needed.


18. Classifies, sorts, and files prints, negatives, and other photographic materials.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Associate of Arts degree.

EXPERIENCE: Three years in biomedical photography. OR

OTHER: Certification: Certificate in Biomedical Photography.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of medical photographic methods and techniques. Skill in developing and processing negatives, slides, and prints. Skill in operating photographic, film processing, and computer graphics equipment. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to transport photographic equipment and maneuver around objects and people to take photographs. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

OTHER:

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Valid Maryland non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license may be required.
