JOB SUMMARY:

Under direct supervision, operates conventional, fluoroscopic, or portable radiology equipment to obtain diagnostic radiographs as instructed by medical personnel.


PRIMARY DUTIES


1. Transfers, prepares, and positions patients for diagnostic radiographs.


2. Calculates and selects proper technical factors such as voltage, current, exposure time, and focal distance based on equipment instructions, patient characteristics, and suspected pathology.


3. Selects and loads proper film cassettes and operates radiographic equipment by activating proper switches in order to regulate each exposure appropriately.


4. Develops radiographs using automatic film processor or a series of standard solutions and water baths.


5. Documents and maintains files of patient radiographic films in accordance with established regulations and procedures.


6. Maintains work area and equipment in a clean and orderly condition and ensures work area and equipment are properly supplied for diagnostic procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Graduation from a radiologic technology program approved by the American Medical Association.

EXPERIENCE: Two years as a radiographer.

OTHER: Registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (AART).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in following safety and other regulations concerning use of radiation in radiographic technology. Skill in lifting, moving, and positioning patients. Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment; to communicate effectively.

OTHER:

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.


CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. Employees in this job class must maintain valid registration with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Employees in this job class will be exposed to radiation not to exceed the legal limits of occupational exposure. Employees in this job class may be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
