JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, performs activities to ensure readiness
and safety of fields/turf for athletic events such as preparing,
fertilizing, seeding and caring for athletic fields, turf fields,
sports fields and/or golf courses. Operates medium and heavy-duty
equipment. Work requires comprehensive knowledge of field/turf
maintenance and NCAA regulations for marking athletic fields.
PRIMARY DUTIES
1. Prepares playing fields and ensures their readiness and safety
for athletic events.
2. Performs layout and marking of playing surfaces in accordance
with NCAA requirements.
3. Measures, mixes and applies fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides
on athletic fields.
4. Operates and performs minor repairs to irrigation system on
athletic fields.
5. Operates and maintains equipment including tractors, front-end
loaders, turf sprayers, spreaders and mowers to maintain athletic
fields.
6. Maintains chemical application log in compliance with State of
MD requirements.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED
EXPERIENCE: Three years in maintenance of academic or
professional sport fields and/or golf courses to include three
years in the operation of commercial or industrial-sized grounds
care equipment.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Extensive knowledge of all aspects of athletic field maintenance,
including, but not limited to, growing characteristics, warm and
cool season grasses, recognition of and appropiate treatment of
diseases, pests and weeds, technical equipment and NCAA requirements
for layout and lining of playing surfaces. Ability to read, write and
perform mathematical calculations; to follow oral and written
instructions; to communicate effectively; to operate and perform
minor maintenance on assigned tools and equipment; to perform
physical work requiring bending, stooping, reaching, carrying,
heavy lifting; to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions;
to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
OTHER: Except for qualifications established by law, additional
related experience and formal education in which one has gained the
knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the
work of the job class may be substituted for the education or
experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college
credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Valid Maryland driver's license may be required. Certification
by the State of MD as a pesticides and/or herbicides applicator
may be required. Candidates selected for employment may be subject
to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine
ability to perform the job. Employees in this job class may be
subject to pre-employment drug testing.
