The Kirwan Legacy

Chancellor William Kirwan has left a profound impact on higher education and the State of Maryland over the course of his 50-year career. The following two videos, which were shown at the April 18, 2015 gala held in his honor and feature many of the chancellor's longtime friends and colleagues, speak to this impact. The first video celebrates and expresses gratitude for the chancellor's leadership, partnership, dedication, and service. The second video highlights the critical role the chancellor has played in positioning Maryland as a national leader of efforts to transform higher education to better meet the needs of the 21st century.

To further honor Chancellor Kirwan's leadership in the field of academic transformation, the University System of Maryland (USM) will name its Center for Academic Innovation after him, effective July 1, 2015. The William E. Kirwan Center for Academic Innovation, the first system-level center of its kind in the nation, aims to capitalize on recent findings from the learning sciences and the capabilities of emerging technologies to increase access, affordability, and outcomes of higher education.
