Letter from the President
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
With the academic year well underway, I am pleased to welcome so many new and familiar faces back into the fold. Throughout the University System of Maryland, we've had campus leadership step up to new roles; most notably, interim president Javier Miyares, who was formally appointed president of the University of Maryland University College. Javier worked here at the System office as a
Assistant Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs prior to moving on to UMUC, and I know he will do an excellent job of steering the campus forward.
We are also lucky to be gaining two new wonderful Vice Presidents who will continue to raise funds for our institutional foundations and campaigns. Kimberly Conway Dumpson has seamlessly taken over for Gains Hawkins at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, after demonstrating a fantastic commitment to UMES' campaign and becoming a most valuable player in her own right. Rosemary Thomas returns to the System by way of Frostburg University after almost a year's absence in Florida. I am thrilled to welcome her back to the System, given the remarkable role she played at Salisbury University over the last several years.
Our current and former presidents continue to receive national recognition by winning national awards and accolades. University of Maryland, Baltimore County President Freeman Hrabowski is one of five recipients of the 2012 Heinz Award, a high honor indeed. As befits Freeman, his award will be donated to the University to continue carrying out his mission of providing excellent education. Former University of Maryland President Dan Mote has been nominated as president of the National Academy of Engineering, and I am confident that he will demonstrate the same leadership acuity as he did at Maryland.
On a personal note, I hope you and yours were all safe during the recent storm. I know many of us at the Foundation have personal ties to the affected areas, and my thoughts are with them as they and their families work through the recovery process. My hope is that you will remember the tremendous stories of human kindness taking place every day and join me in wishing the best to our neighbors to the North.

Javier Miyares Appointed President of the University of Maryland University College
Earlier this month, the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents appointed Javier Miyares as president of the University of Maryland University College (UMUC). Miyares has served as acting president since February, and has been a member of the UMUC management team for more than 10 years.
 Miyares' appointment was unanimous, as his 30 years in higher education and strong knowledge of UMUC spoke volumes of his ability to effectively lead the university forward. Originally
from Cuba, Miyares attended the University of Maryland, College Park, where he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees, before beginning work on his doctorate. Prior to completing his dissertation, Miyares was offered a position in the counseling center and began his career in higher education in Maryland.

UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski Receives Heinz Award
Recognized for his exemplary work in improving the human condition, specifically in regard to his work at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, Dr. Freeman Hrabowski is
 one of five recipients of the Heinz Award.
President Hrabowski's work has led UMBC to double the amount of students majoring in STEM subjects, while raising UMBC's profile by being one of the nation's leading universities for graduating African-American students who go on to pursue STEM discipline Ph.D.s.
Hrabowski was awarded $250,000 at a ceremony in Pittsburgh, which will be donated to UMBC's Academic Innovation Fund. The fund strives to redesign courses and strengthen the university.
The Heinz Awards are given in honor of the late former senator John Heinz (R-Pa.) to individuals who develop innovative programs in areas that were important to Heinz, including public policy and arts and humanities.

Former UMCP President Dan Mote Nominated to Be Next National Academy of Engineering (NAE) President
The National Academy of Engineering unanimously recommended  C.D. (Dan) Mote Jr., to stand as the sole candidate for the NAE presidency. Mote received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, where he served on the faculty for 31 years and held positions as chair of the department of mechanical engineering, president of the UC Berkeley Foundation, and vice chancellor. From 1998 to 2010, Mote served as University of Maryland, College Park president and Glenn L. Martin Institute Professor of Engineering.
The National Academy of Engineering is part of the National Academies, which also include the National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council. These independent, nonprofit institutions advise the government and the public on issues related to science, engineering, and medicine.

Kimberly Conway Dumpson Named Vice President for Institutional Advancement at UMES
University of Maryland Eastern Shore President Juliette B. Bell
announced Kimberly Conway Dumpson's appointment as Vice  President for Institutional Advancement in September. Dumpson formerly served as director of alumni affairs, where she focused on building and expanding the alumni network. Earlier this year, Dumpson was awarded "Hawk of the Year" in recognition of her excellent work. Her responsibilities will include fundraising, alumni affairs, and communications.
Since joining UMES seven years ago, Dumpson played a significant role in securing more than $1 million in gifts, including the single largest alumni gift in history, $350,000.

Rosemary M. Thomas Named Vice President for University Advancement and Executive Director of the Frostburg State University Foundation
 Rosemary M. Thomas has been named Frostburg State University's next vice president for university advancement and executive director of the FSU Foundation Inc. Thomas returns to the University System of Maryland from Florida Gulf Coast University, where she honed her experience in advancement operations as vice president for university advancement.
Prior to her time in Florida, Thomas served as vice president for advancement and executive director of the Salisbury University Foundation, where she led their most recent campaign to exceed their $25 million goal by $15 million. Frostburg looks to Thomas to provide major leadership as they consider their next campaign when she assumes her duties in January.

University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) and University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) Announce Collaborative School of Public Health
 UMB and UMCP announced a collaborative School of Public Health as part of the MPowering the State initiative. The school will give graduate students at both universities expanded opportunities in public health education, research, service, and training. Faculty and staff members are exploring options for "smart" classrooms and meeting rooms to facilitate learning and student-to-student interaction across both campuses. Students will be encouraged to enroll at both institutions, though faculty may offer classes at both campuses or provide an online alternative. To read more, please visit the following page. |

USM News Briefs
Maravene Loeschke Inaugurated as Towson University President
Though her first day as president of her alma mater, Towson University, was January 1, 2012, Loeschke was officially installed September 14 by the USM Board of Regents. The ceremony was the highlight of Inauguration Week, seven days of events welcoming the new president. One such event was the performance of Loeschke and her husband in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Love Letters.
Coppin State University, Morgan State University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and Bowie State University are the recipients of $12.2 million in grants from the United States Department of Education, which will be awarded over the next five years. Each institution will receive at least $2.5 million to continue strengthening academic resources, management capabilities, and infrastructure.
UMCES Research Lab Produces Record Number of Oysters for Restoration
Efforts to restore the oyster population in the Chesapeake Bay have led to the best season yet. The Horn Point Laboratory Oyster Hatchery in Cambridge, Maryland produced over a half billion oysters that were planted in the Bay and its tributaries to help rebuild a declining oyster population. The successful mission towards restoration is part of President Obama's Executive Order to restore oyster habitats and populations in the Cheasapeake Bay by 2025.
USM Officials Meet at Fort Meade
Fort Meade hosted the USM monthly meeting of System presidents, allowing Fort Meade officials to develop a partnership with the USM. The collaboration was engineered to discuss Fort Meade's status as the nation's preeminent center for information intelligence and cybersecurity and to form partnerships with the respective colleges and universities.
UMUC Opens Academic Center at Quantico
The new center will begin offering on-site classes in January 2013, focusing on demand for undergraduate and graduate degree programs in technology, security, criminal justice, and management. Students will have the benefit of a full-service academic center with classes beginning at 6pm.

Trends in Philanthropy
Giving by Americans fell $158 billion in 2008-2009, according to the Internal Revenue Service. The Chronicle of Philanthropy reported that many fundraisers expected giving by the wealthiest to have recovered from the Great Recession by now. However, uncertainty over tax policy, among other factors, has caused donors to hold off on providing major gift commitments.
A recently released white paper on social media in advancement reported that Facebook, Twitter, and other social channels are included in many efforts, with 22% of surveyed institutions reporting fundraising efforts as very succesful. Many institutions also reported experimenting with geosocial services to further connect with diverse audiences.
Older Women Give Nearly 90% More than Male Peers
New research indicates that women of the baby boomer and older generations are more inclined toward philanthropy than their male counterparts. WomenGive2012 found that older women gave 89% more to charity than men at all income levels, while wealthy female baby boomers and older give 156% more than similarly situated men.

Board Member News
Board Member Jonathan Murray has been named one of Barron's Top 1000 Financial Advisors in the United States for the last four years. In September, he was invited to attend Barron's Top Advisor Summit in Orlando. Murray is a Senior Vice President of Investments, Wealth Management Specialist, and Accredited Investment Fiduciary for UBS in Hunt Valley, MD.
John "Petch" Gibbons was recently named President of Summit Commercial Real Estate, an emerging major player in the region's commercial real estate market. Gibbons plans to focus on increasing his new firm's book of business from DC-owned and operated companies, including owners and non-profit/association tenants.
