Letter from the President
Dear Friends and
Colleagues,
It has been a
rewarding fall season, with a number of substantial gifts donated to
our campuses. We are quickly approaching the season of giving and our
donors have caught the spirit.
At the USM
Foundation, we have been taking the time to support the work of those
who give back to our community. We recently sponsored the Montgomery
County Business Hall of Fame Luncheon, held at The Universities at
Shady Grove, which raises scholarships funds for USG students. We
also sponsored the Association for Fundraising Professionals'
National Philanthropy Day. Events such as these allow us to connect
with our donors and friends in a way that is meaningful, educational,
and reflective of the work being done.
As we move toward Thanksgiving, we will certainly be
giving thanks for all the generosity our friends, colleagues, and
donors have shown us in good times and bad. As always, please
contact me at raley@usmd.edu
with any questions or comments.
Sincerely,
Leonard R. Raley

Wealthy Individuals Want Better Giving Advice
Wealthy donors are not
receiving the kind of philanthropic counsel they would like from their
financial advisors, says a new study by the U.S. Trust. Many
advisers focus on the importance of tax benefits as a motive for giving
rather than the donor's charitable goals and personal interest in
philanthropy.
Giving by Domestic Foundations Continues to Grow
A
new study from the Foundation Center
found that giving by domestic foundations continued to grow at a
moderate pace in 2011 and 2012. The report also found that health and
education were the top priorities of the country's largest foundations,
accounting for almost half of all grant dollars.
