USM Board to Present 2004 Faculty Awards;

Board also to Consider 2004-05 Dormitory Charges,

Enrollment Projections, and New Program Proposals

Adelphi, MD - The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents will present the 2004 Regents' Faculty Awards for Excellence at its meeting Friday, April 16. The meeting will begin at 9 am in University of Maryland University College's (UMUC) new building directly across the driveway from UMUC's Inn and Conference Center, 3501 University Boulevard East, Adelphi.

The regents will recognize 11 faculty members from across the USM for their outstanding contributions in one of five categories: research/scholarship/creative activity; teaching; public service; collaboration; and mentoring. The Board of Regents established the Faculty Awards in 1995 to publicly recognize distinguished performance by educators and researchers within the university system.

In addition, the board will consider three academic program proposals: master's program in public health at the University of Maryland, Baltimore; B.S. in finance at UMUC; and B.S. in global business and public policy at UMUC.

The board also is expected to vote on the USM enrollment projections for 2004-2013. Based on submissions from the system's institutions, overall headcount enrollment over the next decade is projected to grow from 125,921 to 165,387, a 31.3 percent jump. The regents, Chancellor William E. Kirwan, and the institutional presidents are already discussing the university system's capacity to meet projections and strategies to distribute enrollment growth across the system.

Also at Friday's meeting, the board will consider proposed increases in the typical annual dormitory charge at USM institutions for 2004-05. The proposed increases range from 1.1 percent at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), to 5.4 percent at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Other agenda items include a recommendation to approve a bond resolution for the purchase of the Avanti property near the College Park Metro station, on which UMCP plans to develop its research park; and the 2003-2013 Facilities Master Plan for UMBC.

Following the public session, the board will meet in closed session to consider executive function items and items exempted from consideration in open session under the Open Meetings Act.

Full agendas and background information for the public session will be available at the April 16 meeting. Sign language interpreters and/or other appropriate accommodations for eligible individuals with disabilities will be provided upon request. Please call 301.445.2756 (voice) or 301.314.7683 (TTY/ITT) to make special arrangements.
