Education Policy Committee to Consider Concept of Four-Year
Undergraduate Program at University of Baltimore at March 18 Meeting
ADELPHI, Md. (March 11, 2005) — Two committees of the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents will meet next week. The Finance Committee will convene at 10 am Thursday, March 17, in rooms 314-316 of the University Union, Towson University. The Committee on Education Policy will meet at 9:30 am Friday, March 18, in room 1105 of University of Maryland University College's Inn and Conference Center (original building) in Adelphi. The center is at the intersection of University Boulevard and Adelphi Road.
March 17 Finance Committee Meeting
The Finance Committee will consider proposed increases for dormitory and other self-support charges and fees for fiscal year 2006. The proposed increases for the typical dormitory charge range from 1.9 percent at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, to 6 percent at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The proposed increases for board range from 1.4 percent at Salisbury University to 7.9 percent at Frostburg State University.
In other business, Finance Committee members will review the USM student enrollment projections for FY 2005-2014.
- Overall projected headcount growth for the 10-year period is 32.7 percent, from 128,807 students to 170,865.
- Undergraduate enrollment is projected to grow 29 percent, from 93,590 to 120,766.
- Graduate enrollment is projected to increase by 42.3 percent, from 35,217 to 50,100.
Also at Thursday's meeting, the Finance Committee will consider amending the USM salary structure for non-exempt staff employees, and a new contract between the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), and U.M. FDSP Associates, P.A., for the management and day-to-day operation of the student dental clinics at UMB's Dental School.
March 18 Education Policy Committee Meeting
The University of Baltimore (UB) is proposing to assist USM in addressing its expanding student capacity needs by offering the first two years of the baccalaureate degree. Currently, UB offers upper-level (junior and senior) courses for undergraduates as well as graduate and professional degree programs.
At its meeting March 18, the Committee on Education Policy of the USM Board of Regents will consider authorizing UB to proceed with plans to develop a four-year undergraduate program consistent with internal policies and procedures and statewide regulatory requirements.
In other business, Education Policy Committee members will consider two new academic program proposals—Bachelor of Science in Gerontology and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Homeland Security, both at University of Maryland University College. In addition, the committee will review several reports, including those on external funding, intercollegiate athletics, and USM's regional higher education centers at Shady Grove and Hagerstown.
