Regents to Vote on 2006 Room and Board Charges

and Four-Year Undergraduate Program at University of Baltimore;

Board also to Present 2005 Regents' Faculty Awards

ADELPHI, Md. (April 4, 2005) — Proposals for fiscal year 2006 dormitory and other self-support charges and fees, and for a four-year undergraduate program at the University of Baltimore are on the agenda of the University System of Maryland Board of Regents' next meeting. The board will convene at 9 am Friday, April 8, at the University of Baltimore. The meeting will be in the university's Moot Court Room, 1429 Maryland Avenue.

The proposed increases for the typical dormitory charge range from 1.9 percent at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, to 6 percent at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The proposed increases for board range from 1.4 percent at Salisbury University to 7.9 percent at Frostburg State University.

In other business, the board will consider authorizing the University of Baltimore (UB) to proceed with plans to develop a four-year undergraduate program consistent with internal policies and procedures, and statewide regulatory requirements. UB is proposing to assist USM in addressing its expanding student capacity needs by offering the first two years of the baccalaureate degree. Currently, UB offers only upper-level (junior and senior) courses for undergraduates as well as graduate and professional degree programs.

In addition, the board is expected to vote on the USM enrollment projections for FY 2005-2014. Overall projected headcount growth for the 10-year period is 32.7 percent, from 128,807 students to 170,865. Undergraduate enrollment is projected to grow 29 percent, from 93,590 to 120,766; graduate enrollment is projected to increase by 42.3 percent, from 35,217 to 50,100.

The board also will present its 2005 Regents' Faculty Awards for Excellence. The prestigious award is the highest honor bestowed by the regents to honor exemplary faculty achievement. This year's recipients are:
