USM Chancellor William E. Kirwan Appoints Search Committee

Donald Orkand Named Chair of Committee

Adelphi, MD (June 16, 2005) - William E. Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland (USM), announced today his appointment of the search committee for the president of University of Maryland University College (UMUC). UMUC is one of USM's 13 institutions.

Chairing the search committee is Donald S. Orkand, co-founder of DC Ventures and Associates, LLC, and founder of The Orkand Corporation. Orkand also chairs UMUC's Board of Visitors.

"I am very pleased with Don Orkand's willingness to lead this important search," said Kirwan. "As a highly successful entrepreneur, a supporter of higher education, and a long-time friend of the University System of Maryland, he will do a superb job.

"I am grateful to all members of the search committee who have volunteered their time to find a leader to position University College for even more growth, helping USM handle the burgeoning enrollment we anticipate during the next decade."

• Salvatore J. Monaco, Vice Provost and Dean, Graduate School of Management and Technology, UMUC
• Sharon R. Pinder, Special Secretary, Governor's Office of Minority Affairs
• Alfred S. Raider, Program Director, International Management, Graduate School, UMUC
• Christina Sax, Assistant Dean-Science, Undergraduate School, UMUC
• Debra E. B. Young, Director, Acquisition Systems Division, Department of Commerce.

Robert L. Pevenstein, a member of the USM Board of Regents and president of Princeville Partners, is the search committee's liaison to the board. Katie Ryan, chief of staff to the chancellor, is serving as the liaison to the Office of the Chancellor.

Gerald A.. Heeger, UMUC president for six years, will step down at the end of August to assume the presidency of a new international educational initiative in Texas, Whitney International University. Upon Heeger's departure, Nicholas H. Allen, provost of UMUC, will begin serving as interim president while the committee continues its search.
