A Message About the Swine Flu Outbreak
from USM Chancellor William E. Kirwan
Given the very serious nature of the swine flu outbreak, I am
providing information on what the University System of Maryland is doing in
response to this public health emergency. Our system office, 11 universities,
two research institutions, and two regional higher education centers are
monitoring the situation and are prepared to take appropriate action. Emergency
preparedness plans and teams are in place, and the teams continue to refine and
adjust action plans as new information and guidance become available.
We also are facilitating the sharing of information across the system so that we all benefit from our resident expertise. For example, our medical school at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, is a significant resource of guidance and expertise for the system. Officials system-wide are working together to ensure that we provide the highest level of services, response, and communications during this emergency.
I have asked all USM institutions to send me regular status reports and updates on activities in response to this situation. Also, I have asked that we all take full advantage of the guidance and resources provided by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
