USM Schools Among Nation's Best in Latest U.S. News & World Report College Rankings

Adelphi, Md. (Sept. 13, 2011) -- University System of Maryland (USM) schools once again have been recognized among the nation's top universities in the latest edition of U.S. News & World Report's annual college rankings.

According to the 2011 edition of America's Best Colleges released today:

The University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) rose from 18th to 17th best among all U.S. national public universities. UMCP finished No. 55 in the overall rankings of national universities, private and public, also an improvement of one spot from last year.

In the category of "Academic Programs to Look For," UMCP appeared in four rankings: Internships, First-Year Experience, Learning Communities, and Service Learning.

As of September 2011, UMCP has 71 undergraduate and graduate programs ranked in the US News Top 25, 63 in the Top 20, 50 in the Top 15, and 30 in the Top 10 nationally.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) ranked No. 1 among "up-and-coming" national universities for the third straight year.

The university continues to attain outstanding national recognition for the quality of its undergraduate research. U.S. News ranked UMBC 4th on the list of top national universities "where the faculty has an unusual commitment to undergraduate teaching." In this category, UMBC is tied with Yale University and ranked just ahead of Brown and Stanford universities.

Salisbury University and Towson University ranked 9th and 11th, respectively in the Public Regional Universities (North) category. Among all universities (private and public) in this category, Salisbury ranked 41st and Towson ranked 49th.

Among the nation's 80 historically black colleges and universities, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore improved three spots from last year for a ranking of 25th.
