USM Board of Regents Welcomes 2012-13 Student Regent Steven Hershkowitz

Adelphi, Md. (May 10, 2012) -- The University System of Maryland (USM) welcomes Steven Hershkowitz, a senior at the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP), as the 2012-13 student regent for the USM Board of Regents.

Hershkowitz is scheduled to complete his B.A. in government and politics at UMCP in May 2012 and continue studies at UMCP toward a master's degree in public policy.

He is a member of the UMCP Government and Politics Honors Program and has considerable experience in student government leadership. He is completing a term as chief of staff for the Student Government Association. For one year beginning May 2010, Hershkowitz served as secretary of the College Democrats. The USM student regent serves one term.

"I am extremely excited to start meeting with student and university leaders across the system, so that I can truly understand the different perspectives amongst our state's passionate leaders in higher education," Hershkowitz said. "Having come from a home with two public school teachers, I believe that I can represent students and the citizens of Maryland with the utmost respect for the value of public education."

Hershkowitz has also held prestigious internships away from the UMCP campus, including positions in the office of U.S. Rep. Steve Israel and with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

A 17-member Board of Regents, including one full-time student, governs the University System of Maryland. Appointed by the governor, the regents oversee the system's academic, administrative, and financial operations; formulate policy; and appoint the USM chancellor and the presidents of the system's 12 institutions. With the exception of the student member, each regent is appointed for a term of five years and may not serve more than two consecutive terms. The student regent is appointed for a one-year term and may be reappointed. Regents serve on the board without compensation.

The University System of Maryland comprises 12 institutions, two regional higher education centers and a system office. USM provides access to excellent higher education opportunities, performs groundbreaking research, offers vital services to communities and individuals and fuels economic and workforce development.
