University System of Maryland Faculty, Staff, and Students to Rally in Annapolis for Budget Support

Adelphi, Md. (Feb. 18, 2015) -- University System of Maryland (USM) leadership councils representing students, faculty, and staff are urging members of the USM community to participate in their respective lobby days in Annapolis on February 26 and February 27. The lobby days position the USM to be heard by legislators in support of fully funding public higher education in Maryland.

The Council of University System Faculty (CUSF) and Council of University System Staff (CUSS) will meet as a group with key legislators on the morning of Thursday, Feb. 26 to discuss the issues that are important to faculty and staff. At 9:45 a.m., CUSF and CUSS participants are scheduled to proceed to the State House for floor recognitions. In the afternoon, faculty will then be paired up to meet with legislators from their home district for one on one conversation.

CUSF and CUSS will urge legislators to remember that strong budgetary support of the USM helps to ensure continued economic development and improvement in the quality of life for Maryland citizens, advance commercialization and technology transfer, and foster cutting-edge research and discovery in such areas as health care, energy, and cybersecurity.

Student Lobby Day, known this year as #SaveStudentSuccess Day, is an initiative of the USM Student Council (USMSC) and will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 27. The group will meet in the lobby of the State House, attend part of that day's legislative session, and meet with individual legislators from both parties. The group will focus its meetings on lawmakers who sit on influential committees and represent USM institutions.

The USM Student Council's legislative agenda centers on the advancement of USM students, on campus and in the work place, to ensure that Maryland's excellent public higher education institutions remain as accessible and affordable as possible for students of all backgrounds, while maintaining their high quality. Students interested in participating can contact the following email address: usmsc.md@gmail.com. On Twitter, students can follow updates about the lobby day, post photos from the event, and rally support at the hashtag #SaveStudentSuccess.
