USM Schools Among Nation's Best in Recent U.S. News Rankings

Adelphi, Md. (Sept. 10, 2015) -- University System of Maryland (USM) schools once again have been recognized among the nation's top universities in recent rankings by multiple publications.

The U.S. News & World Report 2016 edition of America's Best Colleges released this month recognizes several USM institutions for academic excellence.

The University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) was ranked 19th among all U.S. national public universities. Reduced class sizes and improvements in student-to-faculty ratio contributed to an increase in the university's faculty resources rank. An increase in the university's 6-year graduation rate and freshman retention rate led to an overall increase in UMCP's graduation and retention rank. The university continues to have one of the top 20 highest 6-year graduation rates among public universities in the country.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) continued its tradition of leading U.S. News national university rankings for strong commitment to undergraduate teaching. UMBC tied with Yale at No. 6 on the list and ranked ahead of Stanford and Duke. Moreover, in a new category of "Most Innovative Schools," UMBC is No. 4 in the nation, joining MIT and Stanford in the top five.

U.S. News ranked the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Bowie State University in the top tier of America's historically black institutions, at 24th and 30th, respectively.

The publication also recognized Towson University and Salisbury University, ranking them among leading institutions in "regional universities north" at, 53rd and 71st. Towson University was ranked 12th among top public regional universities, while Salisbury University ranked 18th in that category.
