USM Board of Regents Meets April 20

Meeting to Include Presentation of Regents Faculty Awards; Special Meeting of Audit Committee to Follow

Adelphi, Md. (April 18, 2018) – The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents at its next meeting will present Regents Awards to faculty members and hear an informational presentation from USM Chancellor Emeritus William E. “Brit” Kirwan.

The public session begins at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 20 in the Potomac Ballroom of the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) Inn and Conference Center, 3501 University Blvd. East, Adelphi, MD.

The Regents Awards are the highest honor presented by the Board of Regents to exemplary faculty members. The awards honor excellence in several categories. (During a special breakfast reception before the public session, the board will honor each winner individually. The chair will recognize the group collectively during the meeting.)

Chancellor Emeritus Kirwan, who is chair of the Maryland Commission on Innovation & Excellence in Education, will offer an educational forum regarding the commission’s work in developing recommendations for funding and other components to move Maryland public K-12 schools to higher achievement levels.

Items on the consent agenda include the schedule of room, board, and parking fees. The board will hear reports from the councils of university system presidents, faculty, staff and students. The board will vote publicly on whether to reconvene in closed session to discuss items that fall under closing guidelines of the Open Meetings Act.

These items include various personnel matters (including presidential reviews); legislative audit matters that are ongoing and, therefore, confidential; collective bargaining negotiations; an emeritus status request for an individual; awarding of a new dining services contract; and two real estate transactions. The full agenda and supporting materials are available here.

At the conclusion of a closed session of the full board, the Regents Committee on Audit will convene and vote publicly on whether to reconvene in closed session to discuss an item that falls under closing guidelines of the Open Meetings Act. The reasons for closing would be to consult with staff about potential litigation and to seek and obtain legal advice on a matter that may result in litigation.

Sign language interpreters and/or other appropriate accommodations for eligible individuals with disabilities will be provided upon request. Please call 301.445.2756 (voice) or 301.314.7683 (TTY/ITT) for special arrangements.

Parking for the meeting will be available in UMUC's Inn and Conference Center garage. Driving directions are available here.
