Walters Inc. Findings Related to the Death of Jordan McNair to Be Shared Late Friday Afternoon Sept. 21
University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents to Hold Regular Meeting**For Media Planning**
At its next regularly scheduled meeting on Friday, September 21, 2018 at Towson University, the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents will be briefed on the findings of the independent consultant investigating questions related to the tragic death of University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) student-athlete Jordan McNair. Following the death of Mr. McNair, the University of Maryland, College Park announced an investigation to be led by Dr. Rod Walters, a nationally recognized sports medicine consultant. On August 17, the Board of Regents assumed leadership of the review.
Following the Board of Regents briefing, which will occur in closed session pursuant to the Open Meetings Act, findings will be shared publicly later Friday afternoon. The following is an approximate timeline for Friday’s board meetings and expected public briefing.
| 9:00 am | The Board of Regents will begin its meeting in public session in Ballroom A at the West Village Commons building at Towson University. The meeting will be open to the public. Media will be asked to show credentials. Parking will be available throughout the day in the West Village Commons parking garage and public Wi-Fi will be available. The investigation will not be discussed. |
| 11:30 am | The board will vote to go into closed session pursuant to the Open Meetings Act to discuss several items exempted in the from public consideration. During the closed session, among several other pieces of business, the board will be briefed by Dr. Rod Walters. The closed portion of the meeting is expected to take approximately 2-to-3 hours. |
| Late Afternoon | Approximately 1 hour to 1-1/2 hours after the conclusion of the closed portion of the Board of Regents meeting, Dr. Walters will share findings from the McNair investigation with the media. A mult box will be available. |
The Walters review is one of two separate ongoing investigations being overseen by the Board of Regents. Separately, an eight-member commission has also been appointed to look into the culture of the UMCP football program, and its work is underway.
“The Board of Regents is committed to uncovering all the discoverable facts about Jordan McNair’s tragic death, and separately, the culture of the football program at the University of Maryland, College Park,” USM Board of Regents Chair James Brady said. “Once the board has the facts, we are committed to sharing what we find with the people of Maryland, and to making whatever decisions might be necessary and appropriate to best support our students.”
