Timothy J. McDonough Appointed USM Vice Chancellor for Communications and Marketing

Baltimore, Md. (April 18, 2019) -- University System of Maryland (USM) Chancellor Robert L. Caret has appointed Timothy J. McDonough as the system's vice chancellor for communications and marketing. McDonough is a veteran communications professional with considerable experience in higher education on a national scale. He comes to the USM from his current position as Vice President for Government and Public Affairs at the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB).

As Vice President for Government and Public affairs, McDonough directs AGB’s policy activities, public affairs and strategic communications, and trustee advocacy initiatives. He is a recognized leader in American higher education with more than 30 years of experience in association and nonprofit executive management, public policy, and strategic communications.

Before joining AGB, he served for 18 years as the Vice President for Communications and Marketing at the American Council on Education (ACE).

After earning his bachelor’s degree in government at Georgetown University, McDonough earned a M.A. in journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP). He served UMCP in alumni and university communications and development roles for six years before a six-year stint as Vice President for Public Affairs at the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities.

“We were looking for someone who had a strong higher education background and a deep understanding of both Maryland and the USM,” said USM Chancellor Robert L. Caret. “Tim McDonough fit the bill perfectly. He has all the qualifications needed to provide leadership in this critically important area.  We welcome him back to the USM.”

As the USM Vice Chancellor for Marketing and Communications, McDonough will provide strategic and comprehensive marketing and communications leadership, management, and support for the system, Chancellor, senior leadership, and the USM Board of Regents. McDonough will lead an office responsible for communicating effectively the advancement of USM's strategic priorities, and for helping to increase various publics' understanding of and appreciation for the system and its role in advancing opportunities for students and the state.

“This is very much a homecoming for me and I am honored to return to USM and work with Chancellor Caret and the Board of Regents,” McDonough said.  “The University System of Maryland is one of the finest public systems of higher education in the nation with a tremendous story to tell.  I look forward to working with the Chancellor, the Regents, and my colleagues across the system to tell that story.”

McDonough will begin with the USM Office on May 30.
