USM Board of Regents Appoints Search Committee for New Chancellor

Baltimore, MD (July 9, 2019) – University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents Chair Linda Gooden today announced the appointment of an 18-member search committee to conduct a nationwide search for a new chancellor for the 12-campus university system. Current USM Chancellor Robert L. Caret, whose five-year appointment began July 1, 2015, last month announced his plans not to seek an additional five-year term and will complete his term on June 30, 2020.

The search committee will be led by two co-chairs: Board of Regents Chair Gooden and Vice Chair Barry Gossett.

The other members of the committee, comprised of regents and campus presidents as well as representatives from the USM Foundation Board, faculty, students and the national higher education community, are (alphabetically):
Serving as the USM liaison to the committee is Denise Wilkerson, who is the USM Office Chief of Staff. USM Chancellor Emeritus William “Brit” Kirwan, a past president and currently a tenured faculty member at UMCP, will serve the search committee as a senior consultant.

"I am pleased that the search committee brings together such an accomplished group with exceptional leadership ability,” Gooden said. “Our goal is to recruit an exceptional leader who will leverage the collective strength of our system and work with our presidents to meet the research, innovation and workforce goals of the State of Maryland.  I am confident that this is the search committee that will get us there.”

During the next several months, the committee will meet with USM stakeholders, review nominations and applications for the position, conduct interviews with selected candidates, and forward top candidates to the Board of Regents, which will make the final selection. Assisting the search committee in this work is Witt/Kieffer, an executive search firm.

The University System of Maryland (USM) is the state’s public higher education system. USM’s 12 institutions, three regional higher education centers, and system office work closely together to leverage their collective expertise and resources, share best practices, increase the system’s effectiveness and efficiency, and advance USM’s mission to improve the quality of life in Maryland.
