Three USM Board of Regents Committees to Meet on September 12

Baltimore, Md. (Sept. 10, 2019) – Three committees of the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents will meet on Thursday, September 12. The meetings will take place in Rooms 2100/2101/2102 of the College Park Marriott Hotel & Conference Center of the University of Maryland Global Campus, 3501 University Blvd. East, Adelphi, MD.

The Committee on Organization and Compensation will meet at 8:30 a.m. in public session and vote on revisions or updates to several policies and the bylaws. Discussion items include guidelines for public comment during board meetings and board self-assessment. The committee’s final action is to vote on whether to reconvene in closed session to discuss items exempted from public consideration under the Open Meetings Act. The reasons for closing are to maintain confidentiality regarding consideration of proposed collective bargaining agreements, employment agreements, and specific employee compensation.

The Committee on Finance at 10:30 a.m. will vote publicly on whether to reconvene in closed session to discuss items exempted from public consideration under the Open Meetings Act. The reasons for closing are to maintain confidentiality of discussions regarding investment of public funds and proposed operating and capital budgets before the Governor’s submission to the legislature. The public session is scheduled to reconvene at approximately 11:45 a.m. Action items include an amendment to the fiscal year 2020 tuition and mandatory fees schedule to recognize Towson University undergraduate differential pricing; a new health services and counseling building at University of Maryland, Baltimore County; an amendment to the USM 41st bond resolution; and a funding authorization regarding the new Cole Field House at University of Maryland, College Park. The committee will review and discuss proposed updates to the committee’s charge.

The Committee on Economic Development and Technology Commercialization will meet at 12:30 p.m. and receive a presentation from featured startup Veralox. The company recently received an investment from the USM Maryland Momentum Fund. Its lead clinical product candidate addresses two immune conditions with substantial unmet clinical need, one of which is Type 1 diabetes. Recently named Maryland Momentum Fund managing director Claire Broido Johnson will discuss the fund’s recent activities.
