USM Board of Regents to Hold Annual Retreat

Baltimore, Md. (Oct. 15, 2019) – The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents will hold its annual retreat on Thursday, October 17 at the Hotel at Arundel Preserve. The hotel is located at 7795 Arundel Mills Boulevard, Hanover, MD.

The retreat is a public meeting at which the board discusses ongoing trends in public higher education and specific issues that routinely come before the USM.

The retreat will begin at 9 a.m. with opening remarks from board chair Linda Gooden. Judith Eaton, president of the Council on Higher Education Accreditation, will give a presentation on future governance challenges in higher education and any role accreditation can play in managing those challenges.

Other sessions include a discussion of board self-assessment results and enterprise risk and crisis management. Patrick Hogan, USM vice chancellor for government relations, will moderate a conversation with Maryland General Assembly leadership. The panel includes Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr. and Maryland House of Delegates Speaker Adrienne A. Jones.

At the end of the public session, the board will vote on whether to reconvene in closed session to discuss items that are exempt from public consideration under the Open Meetings Act. The reasons for closing include maintaining confidentiality of discussions of matters involving potential litigation and possible misconduct by employees, and discussion of an administrative item relating to obtaining advice of counsel.
