Bruce Jarrell, MD, FACS, Named Interim President of University of Maryland, Baltimore

Baltimore, Md. (Dec. 6, 2019) -- University System of Maryland (USM) Chancellor Robert Caret today named Bruce Jarrell, MD, FACS, interim president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). The USM Board of Regents has approved this appointment, and Dr. Jarrell will begin his service as interim president on Jan. 6, 2020.

In November 2019, the Regents announced the selection of UMB President Jay Perman, MD, to succeed Chancellor Caret, who announced earlier in the year that he would not seek a contract extension. Dr. Perman will begin his service as USM chancellor on Jan. 6, 2020.

UMB named Dr. Jarrell its executive vice president and provost on Dec. 1, 2017, expanding his already wide-ranging duties at the university. Dr. Jarrell joined UMB in 1997 as chair of the Department of Surgery in the School of Medicine.

Since his appointment as chief academic and research officer and senior vice president in April 2012, Dr. Jarrell has been responsible for oversight of all academic matters at UMB, and has been responsible for facilitating the university’s research mission by working closely with UMB administrators, the deans, research leadership in all of the UMB professional schools, and other individuals.
As executive vice president and provost, Dr. Jarrell has been authorized to act on behalf of the president in a variety of matters and settings and represent the president—and the university’s interests—in activities for which the president cannot be present.

“Dr. Jarrell was the ideal choice to lead UMB as interim president, building on his many years of leadership and distinguished work at the university,” Caret said. “During this time of transition, UMB and all of the USM will benefit from his expertise and longstanding commitment to a university that is such a critical anchor for the City of Baltimore.”
In coordination with the deans and vice presidents, Dr. Jarrell has worked to further UMB’s core values among faculty, staff, and students in the leadership, management, and promotion of the institution’s education, research, clinical, and community engagement agendas.

Dr. Jarrell also currently serves as dean of the UMB Graduate School, overseeing many of the university's most critical institutional relationships, such as the University of Maryland Strategic Partnership: MPowering the State, UMB’s innovative and structured collaboration with the University of Maryland, College Park. As dean, he has played a vital role in building and maintaining academic interactions with all USM institutions.

Since Dr. Jarrell’s 1997 arrival to the School of Medicine as the Department of Surgery chair, the department has expanded its surgical programs and developed innovative research studies and clinical trials, leading to its ranking as 11th nationally in total research funding from the National Institutes of Health. In 2003, Dr. Jarrell moved to the Dean’s Office of the School of Medicine, where he served as the executive vice dean, directing the school's education and research enterprises. Dr. Jarrell also served as the Institutional Official for Human Research Protection and Animal Research Protection. He has remained actively involved in research and medical student education throughout his career.

The USM Office will announce plans in the coming weeks regarding the search for the next UMB president. The search process for a new president at most USM institutions typically takes approximately five to six months to complete. A search and screening committee will be appointed to carry out a search, which will conclude with its recommendation of finalists to the chancellor and the Board of Regents for consideration. The Regents will make the final selection.
