Three USM Board of Regents Committees to Meet on November 5

Baltimore, Md. (Nov. 3, 2020) – Three committees of the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents will meet on Thursday, November 5.

The Committee on Governance & Compensation will meet at 8:30 a.m. Access to the meeting is via the following dial-in information:

The committee will vote on a review of committee charters and then vote on whether to reconvene in closed session to discuss items exempted from public consideration under the Open Meetings Act. The reasons for closing are to maintain confidentiality regarding collective bargaining negotiations and a specific employment agreement, and to discuss an administrative matter concerning communication strategy regarding proposed legislation.

Action items include renovation of Building 1 for the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) School of Nursing expansion at the Universities at Shady Grove and an increase in authorization for the new Science Complex at Towson University. The committee also will vote on an amendment to a bond resolution. The committee will hear information items on a real property transfer at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and the Fall 2020 enrollment update.

The committee will vote on whether to reconvene in closed session. The reason for closing is to maintain confidentiality of discussions of bid proposals before Board of Regents approval and awarding of the new contracts.

The featured startup is CoapTech, a company based on technology developed at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Founder Steven Tropello, MD, MS, will discuss the company and its medical device PUMA-G, which makes placement of a feeding tube simpler and more efficient.

Jim Hughes, senior vice president and chief enterprise and economic developmentofficer at UMB, will discuss economic impact of the university’s Center for Maryland Advanced Ventures (CMAV) activities. UMBC Director of Entrepreneurial Services Megan Wahler will discuss the Maryland New Venture Fellowship for Cybersecurity. Finally, USM Vice Chancellor for Economic Development J. Thomas Sadowski will update the committee on several initiatives, including the USM COVID Research & Innovation Task Force and the Maryland Momentum Fund.
