Three USM Board of Regents Committees to Meet on December 2

Baltimore, Md. (Nov. 30, 2020) – Three committees of the University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents will meet on Wednesday, December 2.

The Committee on Governance & Compensation will meet at 8:30 a.m. Access to the meeting is via the following dial-in information:

The committee will conduct a review of the charter for the Regents Committee on Education Policy and Student Life. The committee then will vote on whether to reconvene in closed session to discuss items exempted from public consideration under the Open Meetings Act. The reasons for closing are to maintain confidentiality regarding collective bargaining negotiations at USM institutions and specific employment agreements.

The committee will discuss and hear a brief presentation on the USM institutions’ long-term plans for collaboration concerning the acquisition and implementation of new information technology and upgraded business processes.

The committee will vote on whether to reconvene in closed session. In closed session, the committee would discuss acquisition of real property in Salisbury; awarding of new contracts for janitorial services and life- and long-term disability insurance; and development of the proposed fiscal year 2022 operating budget submission and potential adjustments to the submission.

In March 2020, CEO Kimberly Brown, Ph.D and partners formed Aeon Technologies in Frostburg, Md. Brown is serving as an adjunct professor in Frostburg State University’s Department of Chemistry and works to provide laboratory training for students, establish research programs, and global health collaborations with universities in Africa.

Rich Bendis, President & CEO of BioHealth Innovation, Inc., will present information on the Connected DMV’s Global Pandemic Prevention and Biodefense Initiative and provide an overview of the life science industry in the BioHealth Capital region. USM is the lead academic partner in the Global Pandemic and Biodefence initiative, developed by the COVID-19 Strategic Renewal Task Force of the 501(c)(3) organization Connected DMV.  Finally, USM Vice Chancellor for Economic Development J. Thomas Sadowski will update the committee on several strategic USM initiatives.
