Guidance for USM Employees Regarding Phases 1B and 1C of Maryland's COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution

Baltimore, Md. (Jan. 25, 2021)The University System of Maryland (USM) has been working closely with the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) and the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) to ensure that USM employees are included in the state’s priority COVID-19 vaccine eligibility categories.

Based on MDH and MHEC guidance received last week, certain USM faculty and frontline workers are now eligible to receive a vaccine under Phase 1B and Phase 1C of Maryland’s COVID-19 vaccination plan. Eligible employees are those who are regularly on campus in the following positions and departments:
In addition, all Marylanders age 65 and older, all health care workers, and other groups previously identified under Maryland’s vaccination plan are now eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. We encourage all USM employees and students to register for a vaccine according to their earliest eligibility status.

To sign up for the vaccine, check with your health care provider, local health departments, and local hospitals, and watch for public announcements regarding vaccinations offered through certain retail outlets, such as Giant and Walmart. The state provides this navigator for finding vaccination locations statewide.

Please keep in mind that delivery of vaccines to these providers is unpredictable at this time, and vaccine supply has not kept up with demand—so it will likely take patience and persistence before you are able to make your appointment and receive the vaccine. But knowing that you qualify now is the first step.

The categories of individuals eligible to receive a vaccine are subject to change, so follow closely USM and university announcements, the state’s COVID-19 information site, and local news reports.

To supplement this general, statewide guidance, local health departments are issuing more specific guidance for their residents. Therefore, please pay attention to communications from your local health department and from your campus leadership, both of which will reflect county-specific instructions.
