Statement by USM Chancellor Jay A. Perman on the Derek Chauvin Verdict

Baltimore, Md. (April 20, 2021) -- I’m relieved by the jury’s verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin. I’m encouraged that some measure of justice has been meted out. The verdict doesn’t bring Mr. Floyd back to his family and loved ones, but it does bring accountability. It reminds us that justice can be served in this country, that Black Lives Matter, that our struggle matters.

Of course, this verdict doesn’t end our fight; it strengthens it. Black Americans are still being killed, still being harmed, still being denied their civil and human rights. And so the University System’s students, faculty, staff, and leaders will work even harder to secure racial justice, to improve police practices, and to ensure access, equity, and opportunity for all.
