USM Board of Regents Welcomes Three New Members

ADELPHI, Md. (June 1, 2006) - The University System of Maryland (USM) welcomes three new members nominated by Governor Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. to serve on USM's Board of Regents. They are:

James T. Brady
James Brady is currently the managing director of Ballantrae International, Ltd., a management consulting firm focusing on the development of business strategies. From May 1995 through April 1998, Brady served as the Secretary of Maryland's Department of Business and Economic Development. Brady has a long history of community leadership in Maryland. He is vice-chair of the Maryland Appellate Judicial Nominating Commission and has served as the co-chair of two Maryland gubernatorial transition teams, in 1994 and 2002. Brady, who resides in Frederick County, Maryland, is a graduate of Iona College in New York, and holds three honorary doctorate degrees from Iona College, and Villa Julie College and Loyola College in Maryland.

Cheryl Gordon Krongard
Cheryl Gordon Krongard was a senior partner at Apollo Management, a private equity firm in New York from 2002 to 2004. Prior to that, she served as chief executive officer of Rothschild Asset Management Inc. Krongard is a graduate of Iowa State University, past chairperson of the Investment Committee of the Iowa State University Foundation, as well as a member of its Board of Directors. Other public service commitments have included work with the New York chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Mount Sinai Hospital, and Citymeals-On-Wheels. A Baltimore County resident, Krongard currently serves as a director for Legg Mason, Inc.; USAirways; and Educate, Inc.

Caitlin Heidemann
Caitlin Heidemann will begin her one-year term as the only student member of the board on July 1, 2006. Heidemann is a junior at the University of Baltimore, majoring in jurisprudence. She has maintained a place on the Dean's list and is active in student advocacy. Heidemann will replace student regent Joel Willcher, whose one-year term expires June 30.

Both Brady and Krongard have been appointed to five-year terms pending approval by the Maryland Senate.

Also, Richard E. Hug and James C. Rosapepe left the board May 31. They can no longer serve on the USM board due to recent legislation prohibiting regents from political fundraising. Hug is Governor Ehrlich's chief fundraiser and Rosapepe is raising money for his campaign for state senator.

USM's governing body, the Board of Regents is responsible for the system's academic, administrative, and financial operations. In addition, the board formulates policy, and appoints the USM chancellor and the presidents of the system's 13 institutions.
