USM Launches New Web Site

ADELPHI, Md. (June 1, 2006) - The University System of Maryland (USM) unveiled a newly-designed Web site today. Although the system's Web address has not changed (http://www.usmd.edu), most of the features have, for the better. The new site is designed to be user-friendly and graphically pleasing, and to reflect the university's excellence.

"We are excited about the launch of our new site," said Anne Moultrie, associate vice chancellor for communications. "Its eye-catching design and wealth of information does a good job of communicating what the University System of Maryland is and how we are serving our students and the citizens of Maryland. The site also offers a comprehensive look at the system office which, as the staff to the Board of Regents, facilitates collaboration and efficiencies across our 13 institutions."

The redesign of USM's Web site began last fall. It involved input from members of the USM community --- regents, presidents, faculty, staff, students --- and others, including members of the business and state government communities. They stressed the need for clear and regularly updated content, intuitive and consistent navigation, better search functionality, and an attractive design.

USM hired LMD, a Laurel, Maryland, firm, to design the new site. The firm's creative team worked with USM staff members to ensure that the new site met the common needs articulated by those who participated in focus-group sessions and usability studies.

Visitors to the home page will now find a visual feast of easy-to-access information. There is a "what's new" section; highlights and access to live links to the Web sites of the 11 institutions, two research centers, and two regional centers comprising USM; and photographs to help communicate visually how the university system serves its many audiences.

Also on the home page, the navigational links lead directly to the most requested information about the system, including information about the USM Board of Regents, Chancellor William E. Kirwan, system policies, current and archived system news, and quick links. In addition, students and other interested visitors can access tuition and fee schedules as well as information on how to apply and transfer to USM institutions, and request academic transcripts.

Even though the site's major renovation is complete, the work will continue. Explore the new site at http://www.usmd.edu and send your feedback via the Contact Us link at the bottom right corner of the pages.
