Ramsey Appointed BSU Interim President

ADELPHI, Md. (June 12, 2006) William E. Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland, today announced his appointment of Patricia Pierce Ramsey, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Bowie State University (BSU), as BSU's interim president. The appointment is effective July 1, 2006 and will conclude when a new president-designee joins the campus later this year.

Calvin W. Lowe, president of BSU for six years, announced in August 2005 that he would leave his position June 30, 2006. Appointed in January 2006, the search committee for a new BSU president expects to conclude its work later this summer. The Honorable William D. Missouri, administrative judge, Circuit Court of Prince George's County, is chairing the committee.

"I am very pleased that Dr. Ramsey has accepted this appointment," said Chancellor Kirwan. "As interim president, she will have all the responsibilities of a permanent president. I look forward to working with her during this period."

Ramsey has served as BSU's provost and vice president for academic affairs since July 2004. Prior to joining BSU, she was vice president for academic affairs at Shaw University in Raleigh, NC. All told, she has more than 20 years of experience in higher education.

Ramsey holds a Ph.D. in biology from Georgetown University, M.A. in biology from Harvard University, M.S. in botany from Howard University, and a B.S. in biology education from Norfolk State University.
