USM Regents Education Policy Committee Meets November 11

Adelphi, Md. (Nov. 6, 2009) - The University System of Maryland (USM) Board of Regents Committee on Education Policy at its next meeting will take action on new academic program proposals and a proposed revision to the policy on undergraduate admissions.

The public meeting is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 11 in the Executive Space on the second floor (rooms 2101, 2103, 2105) of the University of Maryland University College Inn and Conference Center. The center is located at 3501 University Boulevard East in Adelphi.

The new academic program proposals under consideration include the following:

B.S. in Visual Communication & Digital Media Arts at Bowie State University;

B.S. in Information Technology at Towson University.

The primary recommended change to the undergraduate admissions policy is the addition of a fourth mathematics course. Under the proposed revision, students who have completed Algebra II before their final year would be required to complete course(s) that include "nontrivial" algebra during the last year of high school enrollment.

The recommendation was developed by a committee comprising faculty, admissions and enrollment management professionals and representatives from the Maryland State Department of Education. If approved at a later meeting of the Board of Regents, the policy would be effective for students entering ninth grade in 2011.

Information and discussion items on the agenda include results of periodic reviews of academic programs, a report on the workload of USM faculty and a report on opening fall enrollments.

Background information and agendas will be available at the meeting. Sign language interpreters and/or appropriate accommodations for eligible individuals with disabilities will be provided upon request. Please call 301.445.1901 (voice) or 301.314.7683 (TTY/ITT) to make special arrangements.

Parking for the meeting will be available in UMUC's Inn and Conference Center garage. For driving directions, visit: http://www.umuc.edu/locate/adelphi.shtml#directions.
