Under general supervision, performs bricklaying and stone masonry work at the journey level. Lays building materials such as brick, structural tile, concrete, cinder, glass, gypsum, terra cotta block, and stone to construct and repair walls, partitions, arches, sewers, and other structures.


1. Measures distances and marks guidelines on surfaces to lay out work. Applies and spreads mortar; positions, adjusts, and fits block and brick in mortar beds assuring appropriate vertical and horizontal alignment.

2. Sets stone to build structures such as walls, piers, abutments; lays walks, curbstones, and special types of masonry. Shapes and aligns stones in mortar; finishes joints between stones and ensures uniform thickness.

3. Cleans surfaces of finished structures using muriatic acid, brushes and other means.

4. Fastens veneer materials to face of structures. May weld metal parts to steel structural members and may apply plaster to walls and ceilings.

5. Works with marble, terrazzo, tile, and other standard materials and finishes of this and closely related trades as necessary.

6. Operates and maintains tools and equipment of the bricklaying and masonry trade. Cleans work area upon completion of project.

7. Provides guidance and training in bricklaying/stone masonry work to other maintenance personnel. May have lead responsibility for special projects.

8. Prepares estimates of time, labor and materials. Prepares reports reflecting daily operations and project status.

EXPERIENCE: Four years progressively responsible experience in bricklaying and/or stone masonry work.


Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in the methods and techniques used in bricklaying and stone masonry. Thorough knowledge of and skill in basic mathematics including area, volume, weights, and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions; of angles and the properties of angles; of OSHA regulations related to the bricklaying and stone masonry trade. Skill in the use and maintenance of the tools and equipment of the bricklaying and stone masonry trade. Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints and mechanical drawings; to prepare summaries and reports; to communicate effectively and follow directions; to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from ladders and scaffolding; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 70 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on equipment and machinery; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.

OTHER: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.


Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license may be required.
