Overview

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore was originally founded in 1886 as a Historically Black College (HBCU) with 16 acres, 9 students, and 2 educators, but we have grown far beyond our humble beginnings (a beautiful 1100 acre campus). Now, we are one of the top 20 HBCUS in the nation, a Land-grant, Doctoral Research Institution, and a top performer in social mobility. At UMES, we are trendsetters and record breakers! Our student to faculty ratio is typically 12:1, which creates an environment of student success and enrichment. There are a variety of majors offered, especially our specialized degree programs (i.e. Art Education, Applied Design: graphic illustration, commercial photography, sequential arts, Professional Golf Management, and Aviation Sciences), organizations and clubs, that students have the opportunity to choose from and actively participate in. With a wealth of opportunities, a highly individualized approach, and academic resources, UMES is able to encourage and empower all students.
