This fall, the Kirwan Center will expand the scope of its Maryland Open Source Textbook (M.O.S.T.) initiative to make learning materials more affordable for students. This work is being made possible by a $1 million grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation’s Education program.

The Kirwan Center’s focus on making effective OER widely available means we can continue to support faculty as they improve course design and try new teaching techniques, while also building the evidence base for how OER impacts student achievement.

The University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business has launched a MicroMasters® program in MBA Core Curriculum on online learning platform edX.org.  The series of seven courses is the first MicroMasters program on the edX platform to offer transferable credits to a full MBA degree.

Educators from more than a dozen colleges and universities visited the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) for its first Teaching with Technology Day to explore effective ways technology can be used in higher education.  Public and private higher education institutions attended the event, and MJ Bishop, Director of the USM Kirwan Center, provided the keynote address.

What’s critical now is that we NOT simply use new tools to perpetuate doing things the way we’ve always done them in the past. Instead, our work must be aimed at helping us understand what needs to be fixed and how to capitalize on the affordances of emerging technologies to best address those needs. ... Until higher education makes this shift, we will continue to deprive our students of the transformative power of technology — in the true sense of the word.
