Reframing Academic Integrity: Creating a Shared Institutional Approach

The prevalence of digital and new media technologies from mobile devices to peer to peer platforms have greatly impacted how academic integrity is defined, understood, and cultivated at our institutions. Partly due to the speed and sophistication of technology development, institutions have begun to understand that “dishonesty prevention” is an insufficient approach to working with learners in this new environment. How, then, can campuses foster academic integrity in ways that help students take seriously their responsibilities for academic honesty while also building and maintaining a culture of integrity?

Reframing Academic Integrity: Creating a Shared Institutional Approach brought together institutional teams comprising diverse stakeholders to explore new approaches to academic integrity. Teams had a chance to examine critical issues and learn lessons from others within the USM. The day also incorporated significant team time to delve into the issue at the campus level and to develop or enhance plans for a shared institutional approach to fostering academic integrity. Institutional teams returned to campus with ideas and strategies to take their academic integrity practices to the next level.

Douglas Harrison, Associate Dean, Graduate School, UMUC

Douglas HarrisonDouglas Harrison is Associate Dean of the Graduate School at UMUC. His administrative and leadership experience has focused on faculty affairs, faculty development, and university governance. Prior to joining UMUC, Dr. Harrison held administrative and faculty appointments at Trinity Washington University and James Madison University. He also consults with colleges and universities on the use of academic portfolios in faculty performance assessment and evaluation and currently leads UMUC’s Initiative on Academic Integrity. His scholarship has been recognized with the National Education Association's Award for Excellence in the Academy and the John W. Kluge Fellowship at the Library of Congress. Dr. Harrison received his bachelor's degree from the Pierre Laclede Honors College at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and his master's and doctoral degrees from Washington University in St. Louis.
