UMBI is Maryland's premier biotechnology institute with expertise in human health, the marine environment,
agriculture, protein engineering, and structural and systems biology.Through leading and partnering with
other USM institutions and other organizations, UMBI conducts groundbreaking research in key areas of
biotechnology, makes fundamental discoveries, generates innovative solutions to practical problems, develops
new technologies for commercial applications, and promotes economic growth. UMBI comprises five
research centers: Center for Advanced Research in Biotechnology (Rockville), Center for Biosystems
Research (Rockville/College Park), Center for Marine Biotechnology (Baltimore), Medical Biotechnology
Center (Baltimore), and the Institute for Human Virology (Baltimore).
