Office of The Chancellor
The University System of Maryland (USM) is a dynamic force
throughout the State of Maryland.
Our 12 institutions and two regional education centers enable the USM to meet
its mandated goals of ensuring higher education access, affordability, and
excellence to a diverse community of students. In addition, the USM has a
growing impact on the innovation economy, thanks to cutting-edge research
activity and partnership-driven workforce development. And with an ethic of
community outreach part of each institution's mission, the USM enhances Maryland's
quality of life through its many service efforts.
As a dynamic system, the USM is always changing to meet the
broader needs of the state and nation.
The most pressing challenges for the upcoming decade—as reflected in
both state and national priorities and the USM's own strategic plan—is the need
to dramatically improve the rate of college completion and ensure that the
State of Maryland is positioned
to lead in the innovation economy. Approved
unanimously by the Board of Regents in December 2010, the plan—Powering Maryland Forward—can be viewed
There are five key elements to the plan:
the State of Maryland's goal
of 55 percent college completion
in the innovation economy
the academic model to meet the needs of the 21st century
our efficiency and effectiveness efforts
upon our growing reputation for national excellence
The successful implementation and execution of Powering Maryland Forward will enable
the state to emerge as a national leader, both educationally and economically,
as the 21st century advances.
